Gerry Duffy
I was born in Leicester to Irish parents and grew up in the kind of poverty that was commonplace back then – the one person in our street with a telephone was always the first to hear about our distant sick and dying relatives. Leaving that world behind through the miracle of education, I was lucky enough to forge a successful career in the charity sector.
These days I spend my time writing short stories and novels. My short stories have been long-listed and short-listed in the Bridport, Fish and Yeovil writing competitions and I’ve had several pieces featured on BBC Radio Bristol’s Upload with Adam Crowther.
I wrote my first novel, Resurrection City (a Bristol-based spy thriller), whilst undertaking an MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa. My second, Forgetting Charlie (a tale of love, abuse and gangsters set London’s East End in 1963), was shortlisted for the Big Issue Crime Writing Award. A third, provisionally entitled Ballad of a minus Man, is in the works.
